Mumbai began as a fishing community built on what was once an archipelago of seven islands. After changing rulers for several centuries, the city eventually fell under British direction in 1782 after which the islands were connected by land reclamation and construction of the Hornby Vellard causeway. |
Later, railway connected Mumbai to neighboring Thane. Cotton trading flourished for a while but was redeveloped into a diversified economy still strong in textiles but including diamond-polishing, leather processing, and film production. After class, our students find no shortage of entertainment options in Mumbai thanks to an extensive blend of both Western and traditional Indian festivals, food, music, and theaters. Beaches, museums, temples, etc. are also popular attractions. Some of the most famous include Gateway of India, an island with sculpted cave temples known as the Elephanta Caves, and the architecturally amazing Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
